Play gives children a chance to practice what they are learning.” Fred Rogers (Mr. Rogers).
Babies donʼt have to be taught to play. It is natural and universal for all children.Play is their work and it is serious business. “ E.g. pick up the toy and drop it. Again and again and again… They are learning about cause and effect, gravity, muscle grip, hand dexterity.
Play Allows Children to Learn in 3 Ways
1) Learning about themselves as they use their five senses.
2) Learning about others and the world around them.
3) Learning to solve problems through observation and investigation.
The learning comes from doing it themselves, watching others and asking for help. Every day objects like cardboard boxes are the best toys (hold up the cardboard box). The principle is 90% child and 10% toy. An empty box becomes a cave, a canoe, a candy shop – whatever and whenever the childʼs mind and imagination creates.
